Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Leah Voorhies, at home; daughters, Connie (Larry) Marcum of Shelby, Ruth (Lloyd) Judkins of Blue Mountain, WA, and Debbie (Dave) Cox of Benton City, WA; sons, Mike (Linda) Voorhies of Libby and Rick Voorhies of Shelby; sister, Ethel Findley of Shelby; 15 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.. He is preceded in death by his parents; twin brother, Robert D. Voorhies; sisters, Edith Pearson & Neva Zuelke; and grandson, Richard A. Voorhies. Richard was born November 29, 1927 at Valier to Robert D. and Mary E. ( Henderson ) Voorhies. He was raised in Shelby where he attended elementary and high school. He served with the US Army during WW2 from March of 1946 till August of 1947. Leah G. Chapel and he were married July 22, 1948. From 1951 to 1960 he worked as maintenance foreman for the City of Shelby . In 1969 he was promoted to city superintendent; he retired in 1988 after 37 years of service. Richard was a member of the Elks, the VFW, the American Legion and the Shelby Fire Department. He greatly enjoyed spending time with his family, his dog Hoover , reading poetry, hunting, fishing and camping. |
